A SOT-A (Special Operations Team-Alpha) provides essential SIGINT-EW (Signals Intelligence-Electronic Warfare) capabilities to an ODA during missions, acting as low-level intel collectors. They intercept/report tactical threat communications, enhance situational awareness, and support information operations. SOT-A operators often conduct tactical signal intercept by embedding directly with the team to identify enemy threats.
Key functions of a SOT-A integrated with an ODA on mission include:
• Tactical SIGINT Collection: Intercepts and identifies operational/technical information from enemy communications.
• Electronic Warfare (EW): Conducts electronic attacks, support, and security in support of ODA tactical objectives.
• Force Protection: Provides early warning of enemy activities and movements to keep the ODA safe.
• Information Operations Support: Provides data and support for non-kinetic activities such as deception planning and PSYOP.
• Target Development: Analyzes intercepted data to identify and locate targets of interest for the ODA.
• Specialized Intelligence Reporting: Acts as a specialized team providing SIGINT support to unconventional warfare (UW) or Foreign Internal Defense (FID) missions.
A Special Operations Team-B (SOT-B) operates within the Military Intelligence (MI) Detachment of a Special Forces (SF) Battalion, providing high-level technical intelligence, signal analysis, and operational support to Special Forces Operational Detachments-Alpha (ODA or "A-teams") during missions. While SOT-A teams are typically attached directly to ODAs, the SOT-B serves as the "Technical Control and Analysis Element" (TCAE).
Functions of a SOT-B on an ODA mission include:
• Intelligence Technical Control: Functions as the TCAE, directing and controlling technical signals intelligence (SIGINT) for the ODA’s operational base.
• SIGINT Analysis and Management: Provides, through the Group S2, all-source production and intelligence support to the commander, managing collection efforts for deployed ODA elements.
• Tactical SCIF Operation: Establishes and operates a tactical Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) in the Operational Control Center (OPCEN).
• Support to SOT-A Teams: Provides direct support and analysis to SOT-A teams when they are deployed with ODAs, assisting with the interception and exploitation of threat communications.
• Counter Intelligence & SIGINT Support: Responds to formal taskings from the operational base, providing signal intercept and CI (Counter Intelligence) section guidance.
• Analysis and Data Collection: Serves as a central hub for interpreting data collected by SOT-As in denied, remote areas, assisting in mission management.
